Davao Light launches its first Construction Workers' Day

As construction boom spreads over the Davao Light & Power Co. Inc.'s franchise, more and more construction workers expose themselves to the hazards of working near the company's power lines.

In addressing this concern, Davao Light partners with the City Government of Davao in heightening safety awareness among construction workers.

Hence, last September 30 the electric distribution utility held its first Construction Workers' Day at the Davao City Recreation Center [formerly known as Almendras Gym], Quimpo Boulevard.

About 350 construction workers from across the Davao Light’s franchise area participated in the half day event.

Davao Light EVP and COO Rodger Velasco welcomed the participants. “The main point of the Construction Workers' Day is to help you to be always safe while working near power lines or when using electricity in the construction site.”, said Velasco.

We would like to thank the City Mayor Sara Duterte for the support along with all the other Davao City and government offices and organizations who have partnered with us in this endeavor.” added Velasco.

City Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta, Committee Chair of the Peace and Order and Public Safety informed of the recent developments related to a resolution, which she is sponsoring. It is designed to improve safety of construction workers while working near high voltage wires. Acosta led the oath taking to observe safety consciousness while at work.

Councilor Diosdado Angelo Mahipus Sr., Committee on Energy, other hand reminded the construction workers to take extra precautions while working.

Meanwhile, five resource persons namely Dr. Rizal Aportadera, Head of the Southern Philippines Medical CenterBurn Unit, Henjie Gatdula of Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region XI, Engineers Cirinia Grace Catubig and Alfredo Jose Bolotaolo of the Office of the Building Official and Engr. Eleno Bahinting, President of the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers (IIEE) were invited to give a talk on the dangers of working near power lines, basic rights of the workers, National Building Code and electrical safety near overhead power lines, respectively.

Also present to witness the event is Gen. Benito De Leon (ret.), Head of the Public Safety and Security Command Center.

Davao Light has also partnered with the City Administration, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers, and the Davao Constructors Association to make the event even more successful.
